If you want to see stupidity in action, just look at all the morons piling on that never rode a Glide 5 feet. Just ask them. They have all the answers. Hell, H-D got sued when their stock went down. I wonder how that one turned out?

Agreed. I wouldn't consider anything less than 100 MPH "high speed" but merely the norm on the open road... at 120+ is when "speed" enters my vocab.

Any vehicle used for high speed pursuit should be fully tested and designed for such use, which doesn't appear to have been the case here. Actually, I wouldn't blame HD or any other manufacturer, so long as the flaw(s) were known and clearly warned of -- though in this case it appears might be to blame.



My questions is how it took this long for it to be known that that particular model was unstable even by the police? Beside the manufacturer and dealer, I'd expect the officers and the mechanics to have seen some of the warning signs of that model. Hell, you've got to practice and put any bike through its paces if you're going to ride it hard, so I'm surprised about this one. Weird.

Clever, keeps the "rubber-glide" ride characteristics while improving the stability and handling. Why didn't The Motor Company think of that? I would have gone simpler - poly or delrin bushings, but this probably works better.

I guess my point is motorcycles are not used for high speed pursuit. Even the CHP does not chase cars at high speeds with motorcycles. That's for cars and helicopters.



Have you ever seen a motocop doing anything more than writing traffic tickets?

I feel terrible for the officer and his family, but I have a couple of observations. 1. Sometimes accidents are just that: accidents. In the US we think that there has to be a guilty party, but maybe it's a combination of things and nobody is really to blame. 2. Having said that: a wobble at 85mph??? Is that "high speed?" Come to the Southern California freeways, where if you go much below 80mph little old ladies will pass you and give you the finger! I have taken old Yamaha 750 triples, Honda Nighthawks, as well as my current ride (Bandit 1200) at speeds in excess of that (let's leave it at that...) without the slightest wobble. What POS starts wobbling at 85???? 3. You might see lots of Harley police bikes, but they are certainly not meant for high speed pursuit, are they? Here we have CHPs on BMWs and I have seen those guys really going fast a couple of times and they were steady as a rock.

Cycle world tested a third link that mounted under the tranny and they praised the results.

It seems like a much cleaner install than this stableright gizmo. Do you have any experience with it?

I think H-D should just change the Glide chassis to be mounted like the Dyna and problem solved.

Well....I watched a KZ1000 scare the tar out of some guy doing 90+ on a TDM one day by pulling up next to him. I thought both guys were going down when the officer startled the guy into a wobble.

Classic feet on rear pegs tuck when the cop shot up 2 feet from the guys left mirror.

Come to think of it, I think I may have swerved and braked just watching from my car.

Excellent Point Buz. Never seen a motorcycle involved on those reality cop shows which show SoCal chases all the time. Makes sense really, why expose an officier to the danger. A Tacoma motorcycle cop was killed a few months back giving chase. The motorist who pulled in front of him said she didn't see his Harley lit up like a Christmas tree complete with siren.

When it comes to road speed on the highways, most people vote with their foot rather than obey the posted limit. Which is to say, if everyone who routinely drives/rides above the posted limit were arrested, most of us would be in jail.

Given that most people find the highway speed limits too slow and travel at a speed within their comfort zone, it has to be assumed that the posted limits are designed to be BELOW a speed that most people would choose to travel.

The reason for that is that speeding tickets are a huge source of revenue for state, county, and municipal coffers.

If the posted limits were actually based on some engineering determination of a safe speed, and given that the majority of drivers routinely disregard the posted limits, it stands to reason that the highways would be clogged with frequent daily carnage.

But that's not the case. The majority of people drive at a speed that they feel comfortable with. The majority of people drive faster than the posted limit. And the majority of people DON'T crash.

The posted limits are based on a speed most drivers are uncomfortable with and will predictably exceed, ensuring that that at any time a majority of drivers will be in violation and that radar-equipped vehicles can easily give out a sizable number of tickets during each shift.

It's all about revenue. And unfortunately, a cop on a big, heavy cruiser died in the pursuit of revenue, not a murderer or hardened criminal.

Well the glide chassis was designed back when the motor was making about 50 hp. Now it's up to 96 and 103 cubes with the CVO punched out to 110.

H-D has already redesigned the Dyna chassis and I would guess the touring line is next. I won't buy a new one until they do. I ride faster than your average glide owner and I want to scrape the floorboards wiggle-free.

I like Pat.. He is off base on some things but his thinking is outside the box..i.e. he was spot on with Iraq..but may be a little ethnocentric. (Border stuff).
