SV650/S

Keep in mind that the SV650S is really just a SV650 with the quarter-fairing (quarter? half? hell I don't know, something like that :) and clip-ons instead of handlebars. Well, the pegs are a touch further back and the gearing is a tad different due to a one-tooth-less sprocket (out back, I think), but that is it. I promise!

Anyway, the whole point here is that all past reviews of the SV650 pretty much relate to the SV650S as well.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the SV650S has been available everywhere else in the world for two full years, while the USA is seeing it for the first time (not including Canadian imports) in 2001.

For more info on the SV650 see :

Re: GSX-R600 vs. SV650S

I can only tell you what I know.... or at least what I think I know.

--

The bad :

The SV650/S has an old tech suspension setup, especially by GSXR standards. Plain old non-adjustable forks, preload adjustable only rear shock.

The SV650/S is down on peak power compared to the GSXR600.

The SV650/S lacks a full fairing.

The SV650/S doesn''t look like just another race-replica.

--

The good :

The SV650/S produces a pretty flat torque curve and smooth HP curve (http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcsuz/99svdyno.html)

Sorry, I cannot find a dyno graph for the new GSXR600.

The SV650/S is a v-twin and produces the kind of power that many people prefer to strung-out inline 4''s, especially for street riding.

The SV650/S will probably save you much $$ on your insurance costs over anything that starts with the letters GSXR.

The SV650/S lacks a full fairing.

The SV650/S doesn''t look like just another race-replica.

--

The SV650 is a fine handling machine, especially with some shock and fork work which would only cost a portion of the price difference between the SV650/S and GSXR600.

Thanks,

Re: A chocolate starfish in hot-dog flavored water?

It's a stolen line from Limp Bizkit's new forth coming album. The name of the album is A chocolate star fish in hot dog flavored water. Why they used it? Who knows... Bad form MO. This is a MOTORCYCLE page. If we wanted music, we would go to Napster and download everything Metallica ever put out. Oh yeah, I did it. Metallica gonna sue me now? Fine, I'll give you Load, Re-Load and any other Load of **** album you guys sell out to next. What's next? Huey Lewis and the Metallicettes? Sell outs.....

I think I know what they were getting at.

Limp Bizkit has a song that starts (and might even be the title) that starts with Keep on rollin. Non the less, it put my mind into one of those ice cream brain freezies too. Metallica? Thanks for ruining lots of peoples adolecent years by sueing those who bought your albums that made you rich in the first place!! Sell out Corporate weenies. Blow me Lars.

2001 Gsxr 1000....Are you Nucken Futs?

First of all, thanks MO for posting my article. Love typing these things all over again. I'll just post it here on the 600 page and beat ya to the punch. I'm sure most people are FAR MORE interested in womens road side urinals than the 2001 Gsxr 1000. Good call. (Loooooseerrrs)

I have questions.... First of all, who out there is seriously considering purchasing the 2001 Gsxr 1000? Not, yeah I'ld like to have it or yeah it's cool. But who is REALLY thinking of purchasing one? For those of you considering it, I have a few questions....

1. Are you crazy?

2. What do you intend to do with the bike? Race? Street? Race on the street and become road meat?

3. Did you know that you are crazy?

4. Have you ever ridden the 2000 Gsxr 750?

5. If so, has your brain skipped a beat and told your balls that wasn't enough?

6. Does the idea of strapping yourself to a ballistic missle sound like a good idea to you?

7. Are you still wondering if you're crazy?

8. If you are crazy, do you REALLY think that you would know that you are? Most don't.

9. Do you think there should be an age MINUMUM in order to purchase this bike?

Seriously, what could you ever do with it? There's no way, and I mean NO WAY you will EVER use that bike to its full potential on the street. Not happenin, not now, not later not until you do and die doing it. Don't even try it. Some bikes aren't built for the road. This time around the road just isn't built for the bike. When is it enough? When can the big four just finally stop and say Man, this thing is totally without reason or logic and we really shouldn't make it. This one will surely kill the foolish of heart. I have a 2000 Gsxr 750 and unless you've tasted the sweetness, you just can't imagine how INSANE this 1000 will be. If, by all accounts, the gixxer 750 will hang and sometimes outrun the liter bikes at the track, imagine what the 1000 will do? I ask again, are you nucken futs? And what about an age requirement? There's just something about a bike dealership, (probably all the toys inside) that I like and find myself there a little too often for my own good. (Can't tell you how much it turns my wife on for me to be late for dinner because I was drooling over yet another toy. She really digs it. I can tell by the cold stare in her eyes. She's warming up for bedtime.) I can't tell you the COUNTLESS numbers of times I've seen Momma buy little Johny that new 929rr or R1 for his first bike as a graduation gift or birthday because he thought it looked cool. Never ridden, just liked the paint job and Mamma wrote the check and signed his death warrant. Seen em make it less that 50 yards and totally trash the bike and themselves even before the ink was dry on the check. There should be a certain amount of responsibility when it comes to the sale of a bike such as this. Either by manufacturer or seller. There needs to be a reckoning. Don't go screaming Gov this and Gov. that at me. We're talking about what is just responsible sale. Not another plot conspired by the man to keep another brotha down. Just reasonable human carring for one another. Handguns. We don't allow children to posses handguns. Why? Because they will surely hurt themselves or someone else with it. Same thing. We don't allow them (In the USA) to drink before the age of 21. Same reasoning. You surely can't disagree with that unless you answered some questions up top wrong. These bikes are not for the foolish of heart even if they do come in packing mommas credit card. They just don't understand what they are doing. So what do you think? Am I just not radical enough or are you just crazier than ****? Would like to hear what you think.

Re: 2001 Gsxr 1000....Are you Nucken Futs?

Although I have never owned a 97 Gsxr 750, I have ridden one. Have you ridden the 2000 yet? Like comparing Apples and Oranges. They REALLY have perfected the Gixxer in 2000. If you haven't tried one out yet, I highly suggest you wait till the 2001's (the 2000's are sold out) 750 hits the market and give it a spin around the block before purchasing the 1000. I think you'll see what I'm talking about. It's just insane enough to cause permanant erection and smiles. Something my wife has become accustomed to enjoying. I'm tellin ya, you get off the bike and after pealing off 929 and R1 stickers off the plastic from the bikes you just blew by, you almost expect to see a gigantic set of balls hanging from the tail cone of this thing. Perhaps they've hidden them under the plastic? Don't know, don't care to look.

Commie Bastard?

First of all, NEVER call me a commie bastard ya **** faced little punk. I'm Red, White and Blue through and through. So, you for that. Secondly, you can take the "sir" and cram that up your ass. Now down to business.

I see that comprehensive reading is foreign to you. I'll slow down and use smaller words and perhaps it will be more clear.

I never said nor do I wish to decide ANYTHING for you. Trust me, if I could decide anything for YOU it wouldn't be good for your health.

Count the times? That's why I said "countless". Look it up. Yes, I've seen it. You haven't? Perhaps timing of when you were there, frequency of visits or perhaps you live in an econimically unfortunate area where that type of thing does not take place? Here, it does. Damn, there I go with the big words. Poor places. How's that?

929's, R1's, Gsxr1000's are good starter bikes in your view, huh? Cat Scan. Hurry.

See where I said "Don't go screaming Gov. this and Gov. that at me"? Do you see the two previous lines to it and the line after it? It says "responsible sale by manufacturer or seller". Now where exactly did I say make it illegal? There is a difference. Someday maybe you will learn the difference. Ever been snow skiing? If not and you do go, ask the guy at the ski rental place to set your bindings to ten. After you break both your legs, you'll understand the point more clearly.

No, they all didn't die. Some did. Happy? Beg Momma enough and perhaps you'll be one of the lucky few, huh?

Try reading things a few times over before responding next. I DO NOT agree with the Gov. telling you what, when and with whom you should spend your money. It's none of their damn business. I do however feel that there should be a small amount of human compassion towards one another that outways the "Ol Mighty Dollar". You do an injustice to everyone who rides, drives or pays insurance by selling a bike such as those to a new rider, young or old. I guess I should have said "experience level" to age requirement. The reason I said "age requirement" is because usually it is the young that are stupid. Usually.

So don't get your little panties in a huff. I'm sure it'll never happen and people like you will always be around to congratulate Little Johnny on his new 929. It's people like YOU who sell it to him in the first place. Do us all favor? Don't get into arms trading, huh?

Up Yours ****head,

Re: 2001 Gsxr 1000....Are you Nucken Futs?

Ha-ha-ha! Well put. Don't know if I care for the blathering part, but the sacrificial squids was absolutely funny. I only question why people get so upset when you accuse them or hint at the possibility that they just may be crazy? After all, we all ride, we're all a little crazy. You have to be to take the risks that we do on a daily basis for the thrill that comes from riding and riding alone. Like it or not, you're a bit crazy, I'm a bit crazy and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's our right to be. Hell, it's part of what makes America such a great country in the first place. Even my leathers display the Flag. I'm all for freedom. As for Hp/size limits, I agree and disagree all at the same time. Inexperienced riders are more likely to be put through the road grinder than experienced riders on any given day. But you don't agree that they have more of a chance on such a bike? I'm not a safety Nazi mind you. I just simply question the decision by young and/or inexperienced riders owning one. I don't think the dealers or sellers should neccesarily NOT sell them the bike, but I think it only responsible sale to explain that it's just not a good bike to begin your adventures on. It's easy to think with your balls and say "Hell yeah it is!" but if you really think about it, it's not. And at the risk of offending what is "cool" I think you know it. Start em out on something like the Ninja 500. In all honesty, I think it hurts me more to see the shiney new 929 twisted up than the rider who just wrecked it. Just a shame to see such a fine machine twisted by a newbie. But a Ninja 500? Well... Kinda like seeing a moped wrecked. Some duck tape and a paper clip and they're on the road again.

By the way

I don't care for this registration thing either, but if you guys/ladies would at least sign your posts under a handle or name, it would make it easier to tell who's writting what and who is calling me a "non-cool nazi, unpatriotic, lunitic, S.O.B. etc." Just a thought.

I've been looking to buy a new track bike next year (schools & open days). I was thinking about a GSX-R750 or a ZX-6R, but maybe this new GSX-R600 will be the one. It looks as though it's a tremendous improvement over the old model.

honest opinion, wreck included

the power is awesome, breathtaking even. the brakes suck, and need steel lines and hh pads. the front end bottomed out, even with the preload and compression screwed all the way in. the rebound was to fast. all of this fork crap can be fixed for $375 at traxxion dynamics. frame sliders are manditory, for us anyway, and the only damage at a 50 mph lowside was a broken shifter, damaged engine cover, and shortened frame slider. this bike rocks, and will be winning races for us in the 2001 wera season.

sincerely, bent racing. after 300 laps at grand sport speedway.

Re: 2001 Gsxr 1000....Are you Nucken Futs?

Well, I think your right, and I think your wrong. I am an 18 year old rider living in the bay area. I have been riding on the street for about a year now, but I have been riding dirtbikes since I was 8. Currently I own a Ducati 900 SS, but I am selling it so that I can pick up a GSXR 600. I walked into the dealer the other day and just out of curiosity, while I was checking out my 600, I asked some questions about the man-killing, wallet-eating, squid-frying 1000. Everyone in the room freaked out. "WHOA MAN, thats a serious bike!" "hey now Mr. , how long have you been riding?" "Oh my god, I think I just my pants" were a few of the many comments I heard a second after I spoke of the beast that shall not be named.

1. Are YOU people NUTS?! Before the 1000 came out, the R1 had the spot for the squid fryer. I know 3 differant guys that bought an R1 for a first bike, and yes, they are still around. One of them has put 20k on his bike and hasnt even had a close call. Sure, they dont use all the gut-wrenching power, but we are americans you Nancy, and we just like to know that its there if we WANT IT!

2. If little Johnny kills himself on his new R1 or GSXR 1000.....GOOD. He is a idiot who doesn't deserve to ride or LIVE by virtue of the fact that he didnt pay attention to specs or what everyone else told him NOT to do. I know its not PC (most people find my lack of nuance refreshing) but the way I see it, he was just another moron who might have gotten in my way on the road and who would have probably died sooner simply because he is THAT DUMB.

3. Everyone is crazy, including you. The question isnt whether or not your crazy, the question is:to what degree is your insanity?! Welcome to the world of sportbike riding, you limp ****.
