Yoshimura's Blake Young won Road Atlanta Superbike race one today with a spirited comeback ride testament to the legend of the old "Big Kahuna" days. Early in the race DMG Superbike champion Josh Hayes and Young tangled in turn twelve with Young crashing out. The race was re-started and Young was forced to start from the back row, because, he said, he was told by DMG that he caused the red flag.
Young was not to be denied, though, and passed a grid full of bikes to take the win, his first of the 2012 season.
Afterwards, Young said that he didn't feel that Hayes' pass on him and the resulting crash was intentional. Hayes clearly was beset by seeing his 2011 title rival on the ground after their collision. "I care about my peers," Hayes said in the on the record portion of the post race press conference.
"I hit the ground and had the wind knocked out of me," Young said, "I was just happy not to get run over as I rolled on the track after the crash."
Young was frustrated by being put on the back of the grid, saying "AMA didn't know where to put me, I don't think."
Young said his Dainese D-Air suit deployed in the crash and may have saved him from more serious injury.
Herrin finished third--his first Superbike podium. He also snagged the holeshot, a feat which gave him much to smile about in the post race press conference.
