former 250yz owner....never idled unless you turn up the tickover very high...that can be scary when you shut off the throttle and the overrun still carries you on.....

did it idle before you had the work done? ..anyhow buy a four stroke already 250f will make you wonder why people ride ring dingers any more

Look for an air leak, check the base gasket, reed block gaskets...get new crank seals too.

That's the biggest reason for non-ideling 2 strikers.

You rebuilt it and didn't clean the carb or replace the spark plug at the same time? And you didn't check the compression before starting the rebuild? Shame on you. The bike is misbehaving because you pissed it off. Best to sell it now and work on establishing good karma with a brand new machine.

I'm not familiar with 2-strokes, except lawnmowers and weed-wackers. But, here's my 2 cents anyway.

1) Check to make sure ignition timing is correct.

2) Make sure the carb is sealed, with gasket and gasket sealer to the intake manifold. Air leaks here cause rough idle, but aren't as noticable off idle.

3) Open up the carb and make sure the slide needle is fixed to the bottom of the slide. If the needle can move up and down you'll get very erratic running.

4) The carb slide should not rattle in its bore or it will let too much air pass.

Finally, if all these answers sound like I've only ever worked on 4-strokes then change your question to match my answers.
