Should bike riders be required to carry side arms? If you are riding a hog and drop it hard on the tarmac you may need to do the human thing and shoot it to put it out of its misery.

If you are riding something else, especially a bike with fully decked out you may want to shoot yourself when you assess the damage you did.

Certainly with major damage if you talk to your insurance company you will certainly want to shoot some thing or someone.

As a newbie I have read and listened to my instructors and they all have said that I will drop my first bike several times. When I first get it and before I drive it drop it several times on the grass in front of my house will that count or will I still need to drop it out on the hard surfaces where it will sustain some damage?

Seriously at what point does one decide it better to leave the bike and not go down with it? I know you want to avoid a high side fall but low side ones do not look too fun either.

Since I am 61 (yes LXI) and am starting my riding career I do not have time for too much of this falling down stuff and need to go quickly as possible to where I have a good looking biker chick hanging onto to me. I also wonder how to convince my wife that a cute, young biker chick hanging onto me is part of the necessary training to become a better rider.
I have low sided a couple of times and both times I let go of the bike. I stopped sliding fairly quickly but the bike kept going another 50 feet or more. Imagine being dragged along under it or pulled off that cliff.

You may have heard someone say, "I laid it down" as if they did it on purpose. There are few stupider things one can do. Except maybe buy a fully faired 600 Supersport or an R1 for their first ride.

I've fallen and I can't get up! Passed my hand-control driver test today, watch out pedestrians...left hand control, down for gas push for brake.

My eat it big cycle was about every 10 years I'd crash hard and break something. This last one was just that, the last one.

So if you see a maroon '51 Hudson Wasp Hollywood careening out of control down Victory blvd. that'l be me. It's a step-down.

So, should I be embarrassed that I have dropped my bike twice in 5 months?
Sure you should - but I'd never let a lil' embarrassment stop me.

If you were the only person in this conversation to drop a bike, I'd probably laugh at you.

MsCuddy, it sounds like you have some scary/good stories!

Did someone say tasty adult beverages? Oh, those are for the car.

If I was the only one in the thread who had dropped their bike I would actually be embarrassed! Right now I am just trying to decide if I should be... :) Okay so, maybe I am a little ebarrassed but I will get over it!

At least you don't have to worry about the ol' wide-bellbottom-jeans-getting-stuck-on-the-kickstarter-face-plant. I did that one more than once...

what can I say, I'm a slave to fashion

I have often wondered the same thing. For example if I rode my Kawi H2 at the speed of 200km/h under a logging truck and my remains were collected into plastic bags by a carbage sweeper vehicle, does that actually mean possible internal problems.

I would say no.......

since your internals would by then be external.......

I've had that sick feeling with every bike I have owned. They all went down at some time. I don't even consider it mine until I dropped it at least once.
did you drop the busa? how?

Well the Busa drop was a classic. My brother in law was over and wanted to check out my bikes, so I grab the Busa and walk it out of the garage on the opposite side of the kickstand. So I try to lower it on the stand away from my body, and the kickstand folds up and down she goes. Broken clutch lever and scratched up side panel. I still have the panel in the garage. I think I am going to nail it to the wall tonite!

Drove 840 miles round trip to Cleveland to get my buddies first bike. The next day he is putting around the front yard trying to get the feel of it and dumps it in the gravel. Last time he ever got on it. Maybe I'll change that this summer.

Wow, was he going fast? Have his gear on? Big bike? Just curious what made him decide not to get back on...
