I have an 1100 Shadow Aero. It is equipped with a "sub air filter" which is a very small foam filter & housing connected to each carb by big hoses. I have never been fully able to understand its function. Some guys on the shadow forum said it is only for fresh air filtering for the carb diaphragms. Not sure if it is really needed or what driveability problems could be noticed if it is clogged or disconnected, its kind of a PITA to get backin after carb removal and cleaning. Any info or experience with these?

Maybe you should ask a dealer ??
Do you have an owners manual ?
Maybe you should get a shop manual.

My guess is that there is just a pressure difference there and almost NO actual air flow.
If that is the case, they should NEED to be replaced.......almost never.

Easy rider 2 is a good example of why if you don't know, DONT POST!

The sub air filter is foam and disintegrates causing blockages in the pinholes of the carbs.
The service manual doesn't mention it. It's a huge oversight. Intentional? Possibly.

YES you need to change it and YES air flow is sucked through it's box.
It's mainly when you pull the choke as to when this happens.

I personally just cut a foam filter to fit and oiled it. Last owner neglected it and I got lucky with fuel cleaner and wide open throttle on Interstate a few times to clear my carbs blockage.

It's a PITA to do it as I didn't remove the carbs. This below pic shows a 2002 Sabre 1100
